Silicone Breast Implants
There are two types of breast implants: Silicone breast implants and saline-filled implants. Silicone breast implants are well known, mainly because of the news. It's said that silicone breast implants may not be safe, can cause cancer or other diseases.
The Silicone Breast Implants Discussion
The discussion about the safety of silicone breast implants is very old already. Since the sixties already silicone breast implants are known as a way for quick breast augmentation. Celebrities and 'normal' people all over the world have been using silicone breast implants since then to enlarge and improve the shape of their breasts.
However, thousands of women since then have claimed that these silicone breast implants have made them sick although it was assumed that silicone is biologically not active. When you consider that billions of dollars have been paid in product-liability payments you might assume that they were right.
Silicone Breast Implants Are Back
Silicone breast implants were taken off the market in 1992 therefore but surprisingly the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved silicone breast implants again in 2006. The FDA says they are reasonably safe, whatever this means. But it is good news for women who prefer silicone breast implants over saline-filled implants. Actually, more than 90% of all women would rather choose silicone than saline because they are cosmetically better than saline.
So that's huge news for the cosmetic surgery industry. Even more since the trend goes towards bigger breast implants. Incited by popular TV shows like Baywatch or Desperate Housewifes, women asking for larger silicone breast implants. However, although the FDA did approve silicone breast implants again, don't forget that doesn't mean they are 100% safe. There are considerable risks.
First of all you must know that silicone breast implants are no lifetime solution and that you most likely will have another surgery in future. The biggest risk lies in leaking implants. While it is still unknown how leaked silicone can harm, it is sure that saline is less risky than silicone. Many plastic surgeons believe that the FDA approved silicone breast implants too early as these risks are still unknown.
So what should you do? First of all be aware that there is a risk. Thousands of women are very happy with their implants and have no problems at all. But there are some that have. Were they caused by the implants? Nobody knows yet for sure. If you decide for silicone breast implants, you have always the option to remove them immediately when problems arise. Maybe you start with some smaller implants first and see how it works for you.
Silicone breast implants have been used in millions of women since their introduction. The FDA has approved their use again but they also require more tests to be done for further examination of the safety of silicone breast implants.
